I disagree here. Old valve gear can be great, but more often than not it isn't. And can prove unreliable in the long run. Do yourself a favour, and check out the newer offerings from Audio Note or maybe McIntosh if you have low efficiency speakers.
If it was me I would go Audio Note and AN-Es or Zingali Horn hybrids. More compact, not as coloured and real bass!
If budgets are tight, go Audio Note kits and built a Tannoy horn - cool!!! You will love it.
Actually live sound can sound pretty distorted (third harmonic ect) as many set-ups are at the limit at certain gigs, so on the one hand it can be great, on the other a squak box... as many PAs still use crudely designed fan horns for upper mids and highs - nasty!
