I never heard these particular LFT VIII's, but the dealer said that they had ordered them from the factory with MIT caps etc. (apparently something ET was willing to do on a one-time-only basis). The dealer went on to say that the difference was quite apparent at lower levels, with greater detail/definition, though these benefits were less apparent as the volume level was raised. As far as I know, the crossover components were kept at the same values, but were made of higher quality (tighter tolerance?) parts. I too bought LFT VIIIa's from Hollywood Sound (with Sound Anchors) and have felt no need to mod them- they have all the attributes I look for in a speaker (I guess they could be a bit more stylish, but for $1360, I can't be too picky- I think they look nice anyway). I'd suggest you listen to yours for several months before you make any decisions- you may not feel the need to mod. I've talked/corresponded with Bruce Thigpen of ET, and I get the feeling that if he felt there were true sonic benefits to be gained at a reasonable price by using "higher quality" electronic components, he would do so. They try many things before settling on a final design, and what ET have come up with is truly excellent, especially for the price point. Of course probably anything can be improved upon, but the cost/benefit ratio may not make much sense.
Cheers
