RE: Kent and I had this discussion a while back

I think you need small speakers for near-field listening because they need to be well out into the room away from walls. I've had excellent results with all the speakers I've tried including my Thiel CS3.7. However, near-field with my Thiel's isn't the same as near-field with my small stand mounted speakers. I was farther away from the Thiels, but still close enough to be considered near-field. The speakers were well away from wall boundaries and the soundstage was excellent with holographic imaging. Here is a picture of my Thiel near-field system:




I think the key to optimum near-field listening is having the speakers placed wide apart with the listening position close to the plane of the speakers. It would have been better to have my Thiel's spaced wider apart, but my listening room just wasn't large enough. Consequently, smaller speakers work better.
