You are effectively telling Maggie owners that something out of "crossover 101" which Magnepan would have considered 20 years ago is much better than the design they have developed after countless months of research, extensive measurement, component experimentation, and exhaustive listening. It is presumptuous to think that your simple experiment and listening tests in which you conclude the 1.6 ".... had sprouted a midrange. Vocals went from good to amazing. Timbres seem more accurate. The slight treble emphasis is gone ......" have any credibility whatsoever.
It is more a reflection on your listening skills and expectations about what music should sound like. You may as well insert a graphic equalisater, boost frequencies that suit your taste, and then come back suggesting this is a new way forward.I encourage you to:
*Beg borrow or steal some measuring equipment and do the tests with a little more science.
*Find some recordings that you can really compare with live music.
*Experiment with different capacitor brands for the standard crossover components (there is a wealth of info on this site about that)then come back with your take on art and science.
It is possible to improve Maggies and many on this list have done so, but not by assuming that the designer doesn't understand what they are doing!

Frank
