RE: In my opinion reviewers that say...

I am surprised that none has done it with the chokes off. Another story from personal experience:

I went to a friend's house to listen to his pair of Apogee Centaur Majors (one of the best hybrid speakers I have heard) and he was driving them with a new Musical Fidelity KW750 amp and the KW Preamp. Now, his home has one wall that is basically glass (and yes that is the wall behind the speakers) so when he fired up the system and the soundstage and the contents inside that soundstage seemed quite flat I was not immediately thinking electronics.

I suggested that we try some damping behind the speakers and so he went and got a bunch of damping panels from his home theater room and we put these behind the ribbons on the glass wall. The result? Almost no effect whatsoever.

Now, I had brought with me my wonderful sounding KR Audio VA350i to see how it drove and sounded with Apogees. His room is large (at least 70 square meters) with high ceilings and the Apogees not terribly sensitive (about 85db/watt). Upon hooking up the KR Audio to the speakers we noticed two things immediately: 1) The soundstage suddenly, dramatically went BAAAACCCCKKKK and the performers on that stage spread out and took their own spaces. When we played a recording performed in a cathedral it sounded like we were IN the cathedral!!! His jaw was on the floor...the whole night. Removing the panels did not diminish this so we left them out for the remainder.

2) The dynamics and dynamic shading of the recordings was far superior as was tonality of those instruments as compared to the 750 watt monster. The 30 watt KR SOUNDED more powerful and dynamic.

I have demonstrated on numerous occasions how superior electronics, particularly how they handle high frequencies, can dramatically affect soundstaging.
