Hi Tom,I used a 6DV4 Nuvistor to drive my LL1660, and it worked quite well! rp is 3k, gain is 33.
Yes, they are available, and no, you don't need to buy expensive sockets for them. I soldered the leads directly to its pins, and a ground wire directly to its case.
7586 has the same characteristics, with a different pin-out.cheers,
