Hey Tom!If you are using connection alternative V, then I would restrict my choice to low Rp tubes. I have suggested triode connected 7788s or 8233s. I've tried them both and they sound OK. My one experience with 6C45s left me cold, but others have obviously had success with these tubes (which resemble a triode connected 7788 remarkably). There are probably other choices, but they don't occur to me at the moment.
In the past couple of years, I have migrated to 3 stage amps to get away from the need for gain in the interstage transformer. This way I can use a low mu, low Rp tube for the driver and still have enough gain.
