Hello all. I have a pair of vintage JBL 112 3 way bookshelf speakers purchased in 1981. They still sound great with the exception that voices coming from the tweeter are beginning to sound a little rough.
Apparantly JBL doesn't make this tweeter anymore so I can't replace them. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to "recondition" them? Or could it be this problems stems from another part of my system, say speaker wire connections?

FYI, I have a AES-3 tube preamp, a Marsh Amp and am using Audioquest Type 4+ speaker cable. If I could just straighten out this one problem, I will have acheived audio nirvana! Thanks.

I have had 4311's, L100's, 4301's, and they all needed to have the pots on the xovers cleaned. By rotating them back and forth while playing sound through them, listen for when the scratchiness stops. Some can have such a bad connection that no sound will come thru. If you have the controls, then that could be it. Just dirty pots.

A shot of tuner cleaner or Deoxit helps this problem as well. I have had the same problem on some Sansui speakers.

Hey Buzz, how did you get it in there?, most of them are sealed. Did you just shoot through the stem?

On the Sansui's you can take the get access to the crossovers and pots by removing the back of the cabinet. The pots are exposed. If they are sealed, there are sometimes little vents that you can spray the sh*t out off and wipe the excess cleaner off. I have had good luck on cleaning pots on receivers this way that were sealed. There is almost always a small gap, or weep hole were you can spray cleaner into. You may have to tip the unit upside down.

Too true Old man!

Like to get together with you sometime...you look like you an I are parallels.

As for the situation with the JBL's you are right.

Also..the tweeters in the L-112's are prone to getting debris between the front flange and dome. Take a q-tip and gently try to remove this debris. Many of these speakers were shipped without the screen shown in the picture...so it should be easy. Clean it out carefully...and spray the POTs...Good luck!
