United says not to fly there. Flights are being canceled. What's up?

FAA did fire a lot of air traffic controllers recently. I wonder whether the firings have been selective? Somehow, how can you have too many 'qualified' air traffic controllers with traffic increasing every year? This year an exception? Most people had already booked flights for this time. Clairvoyance? Perhaps.

Two problems:

1) United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says more than 20% of Newark's air traffic controllers "walked off the job" this past week, forcing the airline to indefinitely remove nearly three dozen round-trip flights from its Newark schedule per day.

2) At times, runway construction has even had the airport down to just one takeoff and landing location. The airport said one of its runways will be fully closed until mid-June while it is rehabilitated as part of a $121 million project.
