I hardly think the guy built this object as an exercise in fidelity...the 'sounds like crap' comments just goes to show how this 'hobby' can make people seem a little out of touch.
I think the guy who built this unit probably has a lot more FUN than some of the people wandering the halls of the asylum.
Sheesh!

And he has shown tremendous whimsical creativity and serious engineering talent, two characteristics that don't always show up together.
Clearly, the guy who designed and built that turntable is very talented, creative, and no doubt had a lot of fun building it. It's a beautiful piece of work. I hardly see that I or anyone else making critical comments about the atrocious sound quality is "missing the point." I'm certainly impressed with what he's done but I'd be even more impressed if it held speed accurately. From what I hear, the pitch is deviating in the plus/minus 20% range.
I also like to build stuff. Here's a snapshot of my DIY turntable (platter & drive cannibilized from a direct drive Marantz) with oak unipivot tonearm. I appreciate creating unique 'art turntables' as much as anyone, but I also value performance.

It is clear that you are having FUN with audio, and I am impressed (and somewhat envious) with you DIY efforts. Did you really think that when you clicked on a link for 'steam powered turntable' that you would find something approaching fidelity or high performance?
Keep having fun!
Chris
