this is the 'trickle down' version of the "5000".
Follow Ups:
It's beyond me why an idler table is not produced today...
Just for the 'record', there is an Idler in production these days, Loricraft's Garrard 501.

I recall now... it was beyond my affordable scale ;)

It sure does not look like one. Beautiful!

Anyone got any idea what's going on with the three pulleys (silver wheels) in the center of the table beneath platter ? An unusual drive-scheme, I'd guess, if it didn't also have the idler-wheel (rubber-edged capstan) engaged at the side of the platter.. very confusing.
Looks like they were only about 13 years too early with this ....
And bling-y it is, in the hongkongtacky school of Gold-Accentuated-With-Gold.
Wonder if these were ever actually produced... ?
Here's our friend the BabelFish :
" The record prayer which the temple fence person of the temple fence laboratory developed with the cooperation development with the SEIKO Epson. Σ 2000 was announced, it was announced in 1994 as the moderate price type Σ 5000 47 units were sold.
The fact that the close prayer is built up only the complete transmitter without with the goal of, development is advanced with the viewpoint of clarification of the fulcrum, even quite the accurate prayer which the "surface roughness meter" can be said is actualized. Bearing structure 1.5 MARU, is designed to be the kind of structure which the principal axis which tilts leans to 2 disks, in order for clearance of the bearing to become with 0 always, it operates. Because of this, even the abnormal play due to the thickness of the oil film it has prevented. The principal axis administers hard chromium plating to the SKS steel, high accuracy is ground, as for contact width of the disk below 1mm, the touch area is decreased to the utmost. Furthermore, by the fact that hardness of the disk barely is dropped, the machined surface of the extent principal axis which is used copies and Signal-noise ratio has improved.
Lower part of the principal axis is designed to be the point structure by the super hard ball, friction being smallest, in order to be transmitted without at the same time wave motion of the turntable being modulated it is designed. As for the turntable the extrusive material of the brass sufficient annealing processing after doing, is finished by the high accuracy lathe, considers the sound quality and processing of plating and coating etc. is not done. The surface tilts and 1.5 MARU we have become pickpocket bowl form, in order to cancel the inclination of the principal axis completely at the position where the tip of the needle traces it is considered. In addition, the set where by the fact that the stabilizer is used, you can push to the turntable the record, stabilize is actualized. Section of the turntable has become uniqueness appropriating where the standing wave is difficult to happen.
As for the principal axis and the turntable, it is not the mere fit and we have unified firmly with the flange connection by 4 these screws, weight has become approximately 8kg. We adopt static balance system to the tone arm, as for weight of the head are above 300g, make the standard position of the cartridge stabilize. When this structure is used with general static balance system, balance weight above 2kg becomes necessary and inertia of horizontal direction becomes too large and smooth operation is not possible, but with Σ 2000 it utilizes 2 levers, in order to balance at light weight, with the difference of lever ratio, it is devised. We are designed to be the structure where always contact pressure is imposed unidirectionally in each fulcrum of the arm, smooth operation is actualized. The stick of the high strength steel is installed in the arm beam, rigidity is raised by the fact that strong compressed stress is applied. The individual system which uses the core less brush less motor of new development is adopted to drive of the turntable. The idler turns, while eating into the turntable, due to the fact that the motor turns, turns at the place where most it stabilizes automatically and transmits torque at high efficiency. "

The device acts to prevent precessional motion of the platter due to the interaction of bearing play and torque induced precession.
It is the work of genius.

hazzarding a guess here.
The uppermost spindle seen in the above photo must carry the platter on its shouldered wheel but with the spindle pin protruding up through it to center the record.
The two side wheels must act like 'idlers' to the center shaft by accepting the side load of the spinning shaft pressed into the crotch between them.
There must be more to this system beneath the surface in order to stabilize the shaft. If I read the translated text correctly the end result is a shaft spinning freely in a 'zero clearance' environment. Seems to me that the opportunity for rumble is magnified by this arrangement.
Needlessly complex.
What I do like is the perimeter idler drive system. seen here:

Not sure what to make of the tonearm.

It has the look of a gunsmith's product.

Think it must be like your description. Possibly with the added feature of countering the 'push' of the drive-idler , positioned as it is, (just visible, upper left of image)--- diametrically opposite the intersection of the two lower wheels here.
Seems like, no matter what, when you're applying rotational force from one side, you're gonna have to counter uneven bearing wear from the other side. (Something even the beltdrivers might profitably pay attention to.)
But, as you say, seems also like the oppurtunity for rumble is increased with more, and more complex, arrays of parts.....
Then again, the line of script beneath the picture may say something like 'handy place under platter for your spare subway tokens !' .. for all we know.
We need a native Japanese speaking asylum member. Too much moth lard !

.... Still, though, this is very, very close to a new & pretty impressive Idler Drive System --- and one that wasn't invented before Elvis Presley. If only this guy could've hung on for another decade+, I think he'd be finding a much greater interest-level in such a product in 2007. As much as we may love our 301s and 124s, there ought to have been enough progress, since the mid-50s when they were devised --- to now produce a sea-change advance in the sound of idler-drive.
Okay, that's it. I'm gonna go pick up a few Lottery tickets, and when I win, I'll go straight to Japan and pry this little golden rabbit out of the hat it went to sleep in. And that's no mexed mitaphor.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for the detailed Allen screw size info for the TD-124 (Bronze Endcap mod). I just replaced the stock flathead screws and I was able to get a tigthter seal especially with the new automotive oil gasket from Fibreflex. I inverted the plastic thrustpad too as the orignal 'side' had a tiny bearing dimple already. Noise floor lowered further and speed stability went up a notch.

Hi fred.
Glad that all worked out for you. That TD124 bearing is kinda fun to tweak around with.

AFAIK, there were more 2000's made than the more over-the-top blingy 5000 above, which has a separate psu... Subtle aesthetics is not one of the designer's strong points IMO, but then again I'm not a real fan of Garrard 501's looks either. Oh, there was also a 3000... If you type Takeshi Teragaki on google patents you'd get interesting results.
the designer Teragaki 'had' a website with models under his own name. That's how I stumbled upon them some years ago.

Thanks for posting I'm a fan of Japanese audio especially vintage. But could not help but point out that perhaps the inspiration for Sigma came from the Gray Research and D&R models from the 50s.

I'm currently working with Mr. Dawley of D&R (the "D") to possibly start making a few tables again. It will be a slow limited # deal. I'm planning on making them with a higher mass platter, solid ply plinth, etc. but keep things very simple like the original design and use an AC synch motor as original, etc. trying to keep a real world price if it gets that far. I'm poor and build all my own stuff DIY so I can enjoy good sound, so it would go against my principals to do the typical hi-fi markup. Won't be quiting my day job etc. May or may not have something going a year from now.
Mr. Dawley is 92 and exited that I'm interested in his "old junk". He's sending me his personal table to go through and has given me permission to use his design. I'll update materials (no gold sorry) and add mass where it will help and use elastic instead of springs etc. But shooting for something affordable and tweakable.
If your interested in any of this stuff e-mail me.
tell me anything else about it. It has a 16" Rek O Kut tonearm. and is simply mounted on a cheap piece of plywood. Norm
It's the first time I saw in detail the idler drive mechanism of the Sigma. It was hard not to share it here.
Teragaki tried to refine Gray Research's thing I suppose.. He clearly was not more 'down to earth' about it when it came to execution though.
Enjoy your mono-mania... =)
Know where to find one?
Big J.

I never saw or heard of this table. I gather that there is a model "5000", in addition to the model 2000 depicted here, which is absolutely gorgeous. Can you tell us/me more about the history of these tables? I presume they are out of production. Thanks for the post.
