Great article. Thanks for sharing!
I wish that when I had visited his place (multiple times) I had a little more self-confidence in both the hobby and in life. Based on that article I'm sure I would have been able to both learn and contribute in that environment — feel like I learned more about him through that article (and am more impressed with his ethos) but was frankly intimidated.
It was ~25 years ago, and I was just 25 then.
I get trying to filter out "the nimrods" (his language), but sometimes that attitude serves as a barrier for the next generation.
Follow Ups:
With Brian you just had to be persistent and tolerant of his personality. Luckily there were other guys at the shop who helped break the ice until Brian accepted you into the non nimrod club. I remember Scott Frankland (who recently repaired my Wavelength 300B amp and my Supratek pre) and Chris Mercurio who called me when they got a pair of Verity Fidelio speakers in the shop. There was another guy who's name I just can't remember, he played saxaphone and I ran into him working at the local music store when my girls were in the school band. He sold me a couple of Mullard ECC88's "on the side" for my Sonic Frontiers amp when he worked at the shop. ETA: His name was Scott Barnhill! The oddest thing about Brian was the fact that he was a trained architect, a graduate of Virginia Tech! He could draw like a fiend. We were remodeling a kitchen at the time and he drew a sketch of the hinges we should ask for on our cabinets.

"With Brian you just had to be persistent and tolerant of his personality."
Yeah... in the end it just amounts to gatekeeping.
For those who are (were) somewhat shy, we don't make the (his) cut and thus must undergo a longer path.
It's all good.... just had a not-so-welcoming side to it.
My take? We are all in what is considered by most of the world as a fringe hobby; might as well not have infighting WITHIN the hobby. And, yes, it would do the hobby good to not require younger people to prove themselves but rather welcome them warmly as they will be the ones to take up the mantle... or not.
Just my $0.02. :)
