I've a 'rimless' 301 Cream grease-bearing about to be used again after a decade - but the only cause here would seem to be the spring shown above: as the 45/78 positions would increase the tension (pulled further away from the metal prong/arm): so your spring has become stretched/slack..?
The underneath levers; so long as the 'claw' engages, should not be the source.

That spring, as you've indicated in the photo you attached (thanks!), seems normal on my 301, not distended. I'd removed the idler wheel and checked it end to end.
I've always wondered what was the purpose of the second (outer side) hole on the trigger arm. Is it to loop the spring for greater pull in case of the sort of problem I'm facing? There's no information in the manual, or in any net search. Any ideas?
