So I was trying to put together a vintage system based around a Fisher 500c I purchased from someone who specializes in restoring Fishers. But after 16 months and 4 times receiving it damaged - 3 of the 4 times these "experts" didn't even double-box it - I decided to listen to the message from the universe. So I gave up on the Fisher and decided to go with a new Leben 600x to pair with my restored/modified Altec Santiagos and Thorens TD-124. Stay tuned, as I'm hoping to have everything together by March 2023. Been a long road, but I remain optimistic....
Follow Ups:
Which woofers, 411 or 413?
That 's the interesting stuff! :)
Too bad about the Fisher, though -- they work nicely with domestic Altecs.

all the best,

still being worked on - horns shaved and powder coated; re-veneered, including baffles and tops; new crossovers. They're the Bs, which means 411s.
will do. we're just starting to talk about the crossovers, so would welcome any suggestions.
If you get bored, post some details about your XO mod (or a link, if you leveraged someone else's design?). :)
I like my Santiagos and ended up selling (!?!) the "A" morph Valencias I had to a regional hifi colleague and keeping the Santiagos. They have zero cachet with the Altec fandinistas but they get the job done.
They serve a backup role here, but I am glad to have 'em and so I am always interested in others' experiences and adventures!
all the best,
mrh
Back before prices jumped, I bought a number of Harman Kardon receivers on the big auction site. Nearly all suffered shipping damage, and in particular, none of the wood cases survived. It is discouraging, to say the least.
What's the condition of the Fisher at this point? Would you be interested in selling it? There's a guy on another forum starting a restoration on a 800C. He just discovered that one of the output transformers is defective (open primary winding). I believe the 500C transformers are the same.
Got a refund from seller. It was listed as fully restored, with modification to phono stage. I became increasingly skeptical, though I paid top $ ($2500). PM me if you want name of seller. Something just didn't seem right.
I'm sure the person I mentioned wouldn't find this to be a cost-effective solution. Glad to hear you got a refund.
Rule #1 in shipping stereo gear is NEVER ship the unit installed in the wood case. They have to be shipped separately. I list the wood cases separately at a later date.
Keep up the good fight!
