IF Audio Weenies grow out (up?) of constant Upgrade disease.
It being the Backbone of this entire Entertainment industry.
Clearly.. a growing trend witness the disappearance of a lot of makers/ vendors. Finally.
Follow Ups:
that's when I was out.
I've noticed even on the other forums a slow down on buying new gear.
Some of the worst junk I've ever seen is now hitting CL and eBay with asking prices of $400 to $800. Luckily, I build my own, and I've stockpiled quite a few vintage amps and receivers that donate power and output transformers as needed. I could probably use a speaker upgrade, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms...
Vintage was fun but not at those prices. Let's be honest, even a half decent new stereo performs most vintage.
I have to respectfully disagree. I have switched over a few audio buddies over to vintage after they came over for a listen. Names like Rega, Schitt, Yamaha, Ortofon, just to name a few were sold off for vintage stuff. The build quality alone is a major improvement.
Yes vintage gear must be gone through and upgraded with new caps, resistors, and the like, but once that is done it stomps most gear under the several thousand dollars range. In fairness new gear will need upgrades in 50 years if it is even practical do such at that time.
I always stayed in the vintage stuff due to the cost of the new. But you are correct in that the hobby depends a great deal on people buying and upgrading. And then it trickles down.
