I appreciate the comments so far. Keep them coming.
It's kind of like I figured, but you guys are helping me focus. And tubes are easier for me to work on. I've been fooling with them for 60 years! Transistor and module availability I had not considered.
I checked prices on the Marantz. WOW! I knew they had gotten high but had not checked in a while. That brings up another point. What are they paying these huge prices for? A legend? The sound--really? Surely there is something new at that price (thousands) that would top an aging unit. If it is really the sound they are buying... Reality check. That thing is full of bumblebees and aren't most of them going to need to be changed? That is definitely going to change the sound. More discussion, please.
Thanks,
John

that word VALUE is a difficult one to define. I would say it might not sound like 5 or 10 grand but that's only a number. They are not made anymore and few of the ones they did make are now in mint condition. So the market and demand sets the price and I'm guessing some people want them for a collection or nostalgia.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, that's just the way it is. I have Quad 57's and think they are worth 100k. Nobody else does and the prices I've seen are consistently low - they are a delicate beast. It does not matter to me anyway, I've had them since 1978 when my Uncle gave them to me. Any used market is pretty weird and mostly based on peoples emotions.
3 thing for sure, the Marantz will most likely be the best to restore and give the greatest listening pleasure, or at least be a standard to judge others.
Before I launch into it, I will carefully research what parts people have used. I'm sure it would make a difference. Does Jim McShane make a kit?
If I remember correctly, there is a little sub chassis connected through a layer of rubber or something (which breaks down). Or maybe that's another one.
and sooner or later (patience) someone may provide a link. I can't imagine there not being some kind of expert on the tube Marantz
Or how about Tube/DIY? Would that be a better place?
