In Reply to: RE: Eico HF-85 pre, How does this thing sound so good? (restoration) posted by PeterI on November 21, 2007 at 21:02:56
sometime in the early 90s - my pal was looking for a budget preamp and we picked this up for $75. He had it shipped to me and I went over it before I was to ship it off to him. I was impressed and brought it on over to my friend who was running a modified Dynaco PAS. A few of us were hanging out and in the end we all preferred the HF-85. Soon everyone in our little audio circle were running 'em.
Neat part is the tape-out bypasses the tone controls but the volume still works.
These days it sounds colored to me - but definitely in a good way.
Follow Ups:
I first heard an HF-85 at Chris' place.
I went on to own at least eight of them. Things changed when I got away from modded Dynaco PAS-es and other 1960's vintage preamps and into my ARC SP3-A1 but that is an entirely different subject.
I did get to hear your TL-1 in my system at one point. Killer!
I have DIY Hagerman gear in my front end (that I built) at the moment and am running a pair of Dynaco MkIVs that you once owned to boot (also totally rebuilt)!

Looks like we both have ARC SP3-A1 and HF-85. The SP-3 "should" be better, and it is, from an electronic POV. But the HF-85 sounds sweeter to my ears , and tames some glare I have been getting from my Vandersteen 2C's.
I'll only change things for safety and reliability. I stopped doing anything to the SP-3, and I don't plan on ruining this HF-85.

Happy Thanksgiving!
