Hi, I made this from some real thick Poplar or Pine rough cut lumber from a saw mill in Maine. Cabots Barn Red is the stain color. The sides are old pieces of wooden lobster traps that had spent some time in the bottom of Casco Bay.The rubber feet are called ( Cookie's) that have rolled over the bottom of Georges a Bank on the bottom of a fishing trawler net. The Heathkit AA-32, recapped sounds fantastic...Mark Korda

Tre', that article you sent me is above and beyond! Thanks so much for making such a good clear copy and taking the time and effort! I just scanned through it for now and I'm going to save it for later to read real slow, like a 16 year old with a Penthouse Forum. I have 2 A-13 Heathkit monos with my own pen scratching by a member past on how to remove the tone controls that seemed easy, that's my next project. I have my AA-32 hooked up with a Y cable to the sub so I eliminated the crossover. The BASH sub amp has a cut off frequency built in so the AA-32 signal is un stressed in the low bass. Thanks again Tre'.....A good egg with an apostrophe...Mark Korda

"Still Working the Problem"
Tre', one memory of the Heathkit AA-32 was way back when my father had built one. Some how he rigged it up to play a homemade bass reflex in the family room and Xmas carols to an outdoor speaker. He also had rigged a headphone jack on it.One day my friend Jim Honan and I were coming downstairs to go out and play baseball. There was a long extension cord blocking our way. With my sister sitting in the stairwell with her back to us,head phones on and oblivious to us being blocked from getting to the diamond, I looked at my buddy like Oliver Hardy to Stanley and unplugged her Realistic Nova headphones with hand gestures included like I was the King. My sis whirled around with lightning like speed and hit me with a slashing right. Her fingernails left 4 distinct wounds, cuts, just like on Bruce Lee's face at the end of Enter the Dragon. When I went to school the story was I was attacked by a wild Puma or Bobcat. Only 3 of us new the truth. Make it 4, the AA-32! Thanks for the info again...Mark K.
Sorry for all those repeat pics. I'm not very good with this tablet....Mark

I have that AA32... what a jem! Looks only a mother could love but midrange to die for and fun punchy bass.
Tubes are pricey but have a stash from way back, so I should be good for a while.

Lokie, that AA32 had all new orange caps in it and the controls and switches have never made a pop. It was a lucky find and put the myth of the passive preamp to rest for me. My father had built one long ago and I remember listening to Light My Fire when it just came out. I got it hooked up to a pair of home made Weems pipes with the added woomp of a Parts Express Titanic 12 inch sub. Got my Danish Vifa co-ax's for 25 bucks, close out. Take care Lokie.....I painted that flag on because I'm half Danish and I had some Frog tape and some extra time....Mark Korda

and interesting.
And real and comfy looking.
Mentioned in previous threads, I really dig your rural/aqua inspired audio equipment cases.

Hi Musetap, thanks.Once again I apologize for the extra pictures. One thing I found out with these cases that the old weathered DownEast effect will cover up an unimportant key to sound......like an abraded on/off switch lettering that has worn off.It might add to the effect(visual) and calm the phobia that Monk has,you would have to have watched that show to get it.Sometimes I look at these systems pictures and it looks like the operating room in the Exorcist or they have their huge amps way off the wall and sitting on the floor.Where do you sit to enjoy some tunes?, in the kitchen? Take care Musetap...you the man!...Mark Korda
of a small flat in SF, where we've been a LONG time.
Comfortable to be surrounded by stuff you love - books, records,
CDs, art and CATS and finding the right audio equipment to fit the
room so IT is the sweet spot. Listening to music should be part of
life, not a process separate from it.
(Have been in proper listening rooms that were rather sterile and the
sound was great, but lacking... luster, depth... meaning)
There are some pics in my photo gallery/profile.
Can crank the system to fill the whole place with gorgeous sound too.
Just bought a used pair of Reference 3A DeCapo to do so with too.
Life is GOOD, GOOD, GOOD!
We are Blessed.
Thanks Mark!

Hi Musetap, your comments were a real pick me up,thanks. Here is the other side with my cat Jack on my grand ma's chair,a Sou'wester on a hunk of drift wood on milk case shelves with stereo mags. My buddy threw out a nice piano stool next to my aquarium/ terrium I've had for well over 50 years.Theres other weird stuff if you blow up the picture....thanks again..Mark K.

Tre', I got everything together to restore some Dyna PAM's but I'll never find a PS-1.I could prolly build one if I could track down every part but then I found these the AA-60 mono preamps with a power supply and an alligator skin. They got cool feet too.....nothing to do with the sound but they look real solid....Mark
It is a time capsule that I don't have the heart to open!

Hi, the old FM-5 Dyna...Mark
But it doesn't have your beautiful custom wood cabinets. Great thread by the way - really enjoying it!
My FM-5 was reworked by Frank Van Alstine - I'm going to go plug it in!
Hi Barry, thanks a lot! I have a nice FM-5 but I can't find a decent station anymore. I do painting for a living and must always have some music on. Driving is the same deal. For FM around here in southern Maine I use a beat up clock radio. I wonder how that Van AlStine comes in. Take care Barry....Mark K.

Here is a Dyna SCA-35..Mark Korda Those feet are called cookies. They are strung together on the bottom of a fishing trawl net dragging on the bottom to tickle ground fish up to be swept into the cod end which is hauled up and dumped on the boats deck. They are stamped out of old radial tires. You can see the fabric in the middle.Where my friend a lobsterman works on his traps their are thousands just dumped into a large field where tons of fishing equipment just lays idle evidence of a booming industry years ago....Mark
I think they got all the sea creatures!

Here's the old Ace Zero Distortion Preamp.I kept the old rusty nails in for effect. Those slats for the trim were pieces of old traps that sat on the bottom of Casco Bay, Portland,Maine...Mark Korda

The Ace Zero Ddistortion 1974.....This is where I used vinegar to age the rough cut pine...Mark
Very cool.
Keeping with the same theme, you could make slotted bass traps out of stuffed lobster traps.

Emailtim, Those round wooden traps are almost extinct. The traps most used today are wire thats rubber coated. That trap you showed might be mostly for show, like a coffee table. Thanks for the comment though. Here are some others I tried for a Heathkit set up thats as old as me 66.I used vinegar with nails soaking in a jar for a night to gray the wood. The pictures were on my Ford Ranger about 10 years ago now.Take care Tim....Mark Korda

Thick is good. Less easy to bend from rotating bending forces.
