You might think it quite odd but black marker around the outer edge hurts the sound, whereas black around the inner lip improves the sound. Purple around the outer edge is good for the sound. I also disagree with your pronouncement that modern players fixed the problem, they didn't. The Scattered laser light problem was never solved. As I've opined, manufacturers either didn't know about it, ignored it if they did know (which they probably didn't) or couldn't figure out the solution. Does that surprise you?
Follow Ups:
I wasn't quite saying that modern players "solved" the problem, but do find later players to sound "good enough" with or without the green pen that there's less need for the green pen. I do, however, still regularly use an Audio prism green light CD mat, which emits a florescent green light, giving a similar effect without needing to permanently mark the CD.
I liked the purple pen's effect, too, which was applied alternating between green and purple along the edge of the CD, as suggested by some British article I read several decades ago. (Was it Peter Belt?) The black pen I haven't tried, though I also tried things like stickers on the CD. Those were the days.
Cheers.
The great thing about the purple pen is that it works on LPs as well as CDs.As I intimated a while back on this thread the green pen affects only the red part of the CD laser. Only about 25% of the laser beam is red, the remaining 75% is invisible light so the green pen cannot affect it. Does that surprise you? But the scattered light problem hasn't gone away. It's never been addressed by manufacturers. I'm the only one who figured out the solution.
I tried but never had any luck with the glowing disc.

Green pen has no effect.
There are many possible reasons some folks don't get good results. C'est la vie.
