The source is a Marantz NA7004 network player. I can't find the impedacne numbers for it?
Length of the cables is the same between the two pots - about 2 foot, for a total of 4' both in and out.
Board is the alps available at Bent audio.

From a quick review of p. 35 of the Marantz NA7004 manual, it would appear that Marantz believes that consumers have no interest in the output impedance of their device. If the cables are the same for the two pots, we have to guess that the problem is with the volume controls and that somehow the Bent audio pot is compromising the signal in some way. As you are probably aware, the $10 pot from RS is made by Alps. It is possible that the "Alps" pot in the motor unit is one of the Chinese knockoffs. I have used both the RS Alps and the Alps in the little blue box (not the knockoff) and prefer the RS unit. You might be able to get the motor pot to sound better by reducing the length of the interconnects to a foot or two.
