Does anyone know what is in these things? Are they similar to the crystal tweaks people have been using? I heard an impressive demonstration once and they seem to be working on RFI.

The Original Cable Jackets (OCJ) do have an audible effect in a system. I've been using three of those and four of the Highwire Power Wraps for years now. The instructions say to place them mid way (center) of the power cord then slightly move up or down along it for tweaking the sound. My impression is twofold. When reading voltage on the 'Original Cable Jacket 'wrapped' part of an unshielded powercord I get no signal from my electrical test pen, which means that part of the cable is now shielded. What that means for anything further down the line at points unwrapped is beyond me other than noise (to what effect that has and if its detrimental to the sound of a system is dependent on noise and other variables). The second point is that I could get a bit more bass out of a pc when the cable Jackets are wrapped around a cable. Same goes for the power wraps in that regard.
Dependent on RFI in the listening room, especially for non-shielded powercords, a cable wrap can limit interference but... in a less polluted environment I think its magic has more to do with resonance alterations by the damping effect it has on a cable. Meaning unshielded cables will get more bang for the buck then bulky shielded ones. Works wonders on a TG Audio PC but next to nil on a gigantomongous Pangea AC-9, unless one is wrapping the connector(s) with an OCJ.

You say the Cable Jacket is shielding the cable from RFI in the room whereas Unc Stu says the Cable Jacket is absorbing RFI emitted by the cable.
you are right geoff. It absorbs RFI. I just rechecked the cable jacketed cord (Tg Audio) once I got home and the pen rang loud and clear on it. My memory is failing cause my other cords with Cable Jackets are all shielded.
TG Audio cords rule.
Cheers
The cable jackets are stiffed with sawdust from machining their mpingo discs and other products. They work similarly to the power wraps in that the mylar diagonal strip is absorbing part of the EMI emitted from the cable. They go one step further by grounding the strip, however.
No crystals are in the jackets.

Thanks stu. Sawdust? That's it? I'm surprised at the results that have been demonstrated to me.
that mylar strip. It is critical in their design. Al Sekela and Bart rave about the Power wraps which are basically a mu metal like wire which coils around the power cords.
Stu
I like them. I use them, but not on everything. No prejudice nor theory in that decision, just pocketbook and laziness issues.
Al liked them a great deal more than I did, but he did two things I didn't do:
1) He ran the wire the complete length of his cables, mostly his PCs.
2) He eventually started grounding them as well.
Al's system sounds superb, so I don't doubt his results. I never tested these in my system, as I can't afford that much PW wire and I am not the world's champ solderer either.
Again, another scheme using about 3 metals to absorb the RFI. I don't know if it's the same formula as Mu metal. I've never tried MM.
You can use an alligator clip like Shum Mook and ground the power wrap.
Stu
Al was friends with Don Palmer, so he had ready access to the wire in Power Wraps. I don't, and that's an awful lot of wraps at about $25-30 each.....
