Hi, What would you recommend for a good tool for soldering? I plan on doing a fair bit of soldering in the future and need something that will work well (general home audio). I've got a "gun" but it's lousy. I also tried a "pencil" from ratshack. It was a piece of crap. Solder type as well. Please be specific if possible. Paul

Desoldering gun
Add a solder sucker tool (or solder wick) for removing solder during repairs. A must have for PC boards.
I've had mine about 18 months and can't think of a bad thing to say about it. Makes me look better than I really am.

It really is a great tool.
Hakko it is. Thanks everyone for your input. Paul

An excellent unit.

I'm a relative novice at soldering but I've found that the Hakko 936 is the best soldering gear I've used. Nice selection of tips are offered. I've had good results with Wonder Solder that heats quickly and flows easily. As with everything else, others will have favorite choices regarding solder for various reasons.

Just get one that has adjustable heat settings and a generous selection of tip sizes and shapes.
You pretty much get what you pay for.
As for solder I use what ever I can grab from work. Right now its Alpha Pure Core 33/67
I use a Metcal solder station and Cardas leaded solder. Can't complain.
