I have posted a couple of times, trying to seek advice for getting/making a 12V DC power supply for my Dacmagic. (Thanks to Duster and John Swenson who helped out) When just about to take the plunge, I found that it is actually an AC POWER SUPPLY that I should be looking for!!!!!
As I understand, the regulation of the Dacmagic takes place in the machine, not the power supply. In this case, would a bigger/nicer 12V toroid attached with nice cables do the trick in improving sound, or should something else be added to it? I am/will be plugging the power supply into a power conditioner in any case. My phono stage (a Densen) benefited quite well simply from a bigger toroid way back when.
Please advise. Thanks.

The PSU output sure is 12Vac.Decent size power supply but what's with the cheezy feed cable from the PSU to the DAC unit. I think some improvement with the cable could yield some sonic improvements from the DAC.
I tested the unloaded voltage out of the PSU, it measured a little over 14Vac. 122Vac feeding the PSU.
Did you notice the blades on the PSU are non polarized?
I wonder if the orientation of the the way the PSU is plugged into the AC power would have any effect on the sonics of the DAC? I may try some listening with the PSU plugged in both ways for any difference, just for the hell of it.....I did a polarity orientation test. Ics unplugged from the DAC
Voltage measured from an RCA shell connector to the grounded conductor, neutral, of 120V outlet. Both voltage measurements were very close to one another.
First test, 7.99Vac. Plug reversed 180, 7.55Vac.
Not sure enough voltage difference to cause any real sonic improvement.

I tried the ac orientation thing a while ago, too, and found pretty minimal difference either way. I guess I might try getting a nicer toroid (and wires) to see if it makes any diff.
Thanks.

says 12V ~ 1500mA, USE SUPPLIED PSU ONLY!
I guess the ~ tilda is a sine wave. PSU should state on it plainly what the in and out is.
Paul McGowan got into this business by discovering that a tuner sounded much better with a way too big for the load, power transformer. Nuff said.
"E pur si muove...And yet it moves"
Suppression caps are imprinted with a voltage rating, and most of them use the tilda to indicate that this is an AC rating.
Try installing a 0.1 cap infront of the diodes. The cap goes + to - and the 12 volt ac lines. The Dacmagic most likely has nothing in front of the diodes.
A larger toroid MAY improve things, but may not. Plus most power transformers are rated at full load, so a larger 12 volt tranformer will output a higher voltage when lightly loaded.
