Read an article by well-known finisher/conservator Jeff Jewett describing how modern walnut veneer is markedly gray toned, lacking the browns of yesteryear. He recommended a seal coat of amber shellac to bring out the brown tones and reveal the color. I decided to give it a try with my latest build. The veneer is just flat cut NBL walnut from Tape-ease. NBL has a wood backing that makes it musch easier to trim than paper-backed and shows No Black Line.
I went with all-shellac; Bullseye Amber you can get anywhere, about 6 coats padded on. A startling difference is an understatement, check it out:

You're right, made me look.
I didn't realise how far off the color balance is in the pic. They really are nicely browned, honest.
