Hi,
I am looking at the possiblities of removing my crossovers form my speakers and replacing the caps and resistors whilst Im at it. The current caps are Solen 20 uF 400VDC (midrange driver) and 3.3 uF 400VDC (tweeter). There are also two resistors in the tweeter circuit but I cannot yet make out their values.
My question is what to replace them with. I have spent a good couple of hours scouring the net and have found various high grade caps but all seem to have different VDC specs. Can anybody please enlighten on this and point me in the right direction. I dont mind spending as much is needed to get a decent upgrade but do feel that the $700 caps that I found were a bit excessive! Thanks for any help.

So you're looking for cap recommendations??????? Here are a few places to start.

Many of the high voltage cap values are for coupling tube circuits which you really don't need if you have a choice.
Mundorf makes some great resistors which I'd change as long as you're in there.

Thanks for the info guys. So how does the VDC value effect the situation?
Thanks
It doesn't. I'd use anything around 100-200volts. More only if you can't get the right value uF. Higher V just costs more and will be too big.

Solens are not bad. Many Hi-end speaker manufacturers do use them because they have a very price/performance ratio. You can also try multi-cap.
Enclosed is the finished project.

I have upgraded my Celestion SL6 with DynamiCap and they are pretty good a few years back. They are not that expensive.
Then I upgraded my Focus Audio FS68se with Mundorf Supreme and oil/silver caps. The sound is rich and smooth and the result is superior.
Have fun and good listening.

You're going to get a bazillion recommendations of everyone's favorite caps. Just how much audible benefit you're going to get by paralleling a pair of Hovland 10.0uf caps at about $50 a piece to get the 20uFd you need is highly debatable. But if you really want to buy replacements, Parts Express offers Auricaps, KimberKaps, AudioCap Theta, and Solens. You will probably have to parallel some values to get what you're looking for. As far as voltage, anything above 200 will be fine.
I bought a bunch of these last month from this seller and they sound better in my 3rd order BW, 1600 Hz crossover than Solens, Auricaps, or Mundorf Supremes. There's a clarity to good oil caps in large values you don't get with foil IMHO. And they're cheap, like me.

The resistors should be non-inductive. Do they look like blocks of cement? You should be able to measure them in the circuit, if not, just lift one end of the pair.A good substitution are Mills Wirewounds. Be sure to get an equal or higher watt rating.
That's a Kimber lurking under the board for the attenuation circuit. Very nice in small values.
