Nice. I have a PS Audio NH for fun... and to see how my lines behave. The breaker phase (1 of 2) that my stereo is on is fine; measures 60Hz on my multimeter. Then I measure the all the outlets connected to the other phase of the breaker- blammo. 500Hz to 15kHz (mostly ~1-3kHz) is the reading. Of course, the NH looks like it's a fixed blue light on that phase.
Any ideas? Is my other panel phase playing it's own tunes in the ~midrange area? :)
Why isn't the phase that my stereo is on also reading like that? I'm in a condo, city, effect is still present after nearly every breaker is shut off save the one for the circuit being tested.

and thanks for the help! It's still doing it.

For that frequency range, my first guess would be a light dimmer. They function by delaying turnon of the pass element until partway into the cycle. The effect can look like halfdome, with a very steep initial rise, and then the sinewave down to the zero crossing where the triac switches off until... and you get halfdome inverted. That fast rise time generates a lot of noise. It can be filtered of course, but is usually not for cost, size, and thermal reasons. Fluorescent lamps with solid state ballasts can also generate noise on the line.Industrial motors, speed controllers. For higher frequencies, some digital equipment, AM pickup, etc.
Noise on lines has greatly increased in recent years. Audio eqpt varies greatly in its rejection of AC-line-borne trash; a simple power supply with only standard large, relatively inductive electrolytics will let the hf junk dance right on past. Depending on circumstances, the amount of HF trash will vary a great deal from location to location, and may well account for the variability in subjective comments about line filters, etc.
As the new owner of a laptop computer, I was startled to see the number of WiFi networks I could pickup. Typically 5 at any given moment, and they change as I walk around my condo. My Mom's apt has at least 7 at any time.
Throw in all the new digital TV channels coming on line, plus cell phone coverage, and we are indeed getting barraged by Electromagnetic transmission.
