If this is in the wrong section please let me know so I can move it right away.
I'm trying to piece together a little project that so far isnt going very well. I just wanted to make a small "surround sound" effect with what I've got. This is what I have so far: Akai AA-A25 reciever (very old), regular RCA tv with one set of outputs on the back and a "Gameport" on the front, two Yamaha NS-A570 tower speakers, two small stereo speakers, and Xbox. Just to put it out there, I want to hook all this up to get "surround sound".
So far these are the connections I've made: tv outputs -> cd input on receiver, xbox red/white rca -> phono input on receiver, and the speakers bi-wired (16g) into the "a" speaker inputs.
When I have the tv on, no sound will come from the speakers. When I have Xbox on, sound is there, but its horrible and all fuzzy.
I'm new and probably dont correctly understand all stereo components so I apologize in advance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you've got any questions ask away. Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I tried two different sets of cables and neither work.
I looked up the manual online and it says that the back rca connections are inputs. Nothing about the front "Gameport" though. Heres the pdf if you want to take a look. http://157.254.235.130/public/F19430_ib.pdf
Does this mean that I'd need a vcr so then I can get outputs from that? I cant really swap the xbox cables because they are the original xbox wires with the specific xbox end. It has to be something with a vcr, don't you think?
Sounds like your TV doesn't have audio out. You'll need a hi-fi VCR for the audio and just connect the video to TV.
Connect whatever source [cable, satellite, etc.] to the VCR.
Alright so the vcr will have to have inputs from the tv and then a set of outputs to go to the receiver? Do I have that right? What inputs on the receiver do the outputs from the vcr go? all i've got left on the receiver is tape 1 and 2 and phono. the cd input is for xbox. Does it sound like I'll have to choose?
Since your TV does not have audio outputs, the only source of TV audio signal you have would be the audio out jacks of the VCR. The VCR has a tuner built in, as well as audio reception circuits. To get the benefit of improved audio from your receiver and speakers, you will need to tune your TV programs with the VCR and use your TV for the picture only (turn the volume all the way down).
Connect a coax cable from the VCR video out to the TV input and tune the TV to channel 3 or 4, whichever the VCR video output is set to. Connect RCA cables from the audio out jacks on the VCR to the Tape 1 input jacks (not the output jacks) of the receiver. Select Tape 1 on the receiver to hear the TV audio through your system, and use the receiver volume control to regulate sound level.
Note that you will need a VCR that works with your source. If you have a broadcast antenna, be aware that analog TV is going to disappear shortly, and you will either need a digital converter, or to sign up for cable or satellite service. Old VCRs may not be able to tune the channels present on the cable or satellite box.
Please also note that none of this will provide multple audio channels for surround-sound. It will only provide Left and Right Stereo audio channels.
Update: I've got a vcr and I've got sound through the speakers from the tv. The only problem is that as the video channel on the tv changes, the audio stays the same unless I manually change the channel on the vcr. I cant find anything on the tv menu or vcr about programming. The only thing possibly programming related on the vcr is a easy set up and channel tracking buttons. Nothing happens when i hit the easy set up button though. I have the vcr set up to channel 3 on the back. Whats next?

Firstly.
Don't plug anything other than a turntable into the phono input as it is amplified and adjusted for vinyl playback.
If there is an aux input use that.
As far as the tv outputs to rcvr. they should work.
Have you selected cd on the receiver when trying that?
There may be a switch or selection on the tv itself to enable audio out.
When bi-wiring speakers it's probably best to take A speakers out to woofers and use B to high freq.
If you are using four speakers run one set to each A and B.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice! I hooked my xbox into the cd input on the receiver and that is working great with clean sound. The only problem left is the tv. I hooked up the same set up as with xbox, but nothing. The tv has audio outputs for "Stereo", "SAP", and "Mono". None of these did the trick. There is no sound or muffle whatsoever, but could cheap cables be the problem. They are just regular, small RCA cables. I would think that it would still make some noise though so thats why I dont really know. Is it possible that the outputs on the back of the tv could not be functioning? Any other way to test them?
On the back of the receiver, there are the two tape outputs. When I plug the tv cables into these, and press tape 1 or 2 on the front of the receiver, it just says dubbing. I take it these wont work? Thanks for the help so far though!
You should get sound with cheap cables as long as they are not damaged. If someone has tugged on the cable to get it unplugged, however, it may be broken inside.
First, check that your TV jacks are for audio output and are not meant for the audio input from a VCR. The TV manual will tell you, and there should be a word such as "out" embossed on the plastic of the TV back cover. I'm suspicious because you mentioned a "mono" jack, and this is typically for VCR audio input.
Assuming this checks out, if you can, use the cables that you used with your x-box to go from the TV stereo output to the CD input of the receiver. You know that these cables work. Check the setup menu on your TV to see if you have to set something to get a signal out of the rear panel jacks. If none of this works, then it is likely your TV is defective.
If the x-box cables don't fit, use the cheap cables to go from your x-box to the CD input. You know that the x-box and the CD input both work. You should get sound if the cables are intact. If they are broken, then replace them.
