I was using pencils from the mid 50's. I believe they took out the lead paint by the early 60's, but that was a quite a while back and as a kid, I don't remember much except that I was always being told not to chew on my pencil. Now, mind you only the paint used lead, not the center graphite core. I do believe the lead paint tasted a bit sweet....but since lead is supposed to reduce your IQ, I think it tasted sweet.
As for knowing about lead, I am a repository of great amounts of usually totally useless information. I also was a nuclear worker in the US Navy for a while and we used a lot of lead for shielding. There were times it felt like I could scratch my ankles without bending over.

Follow Ups:
Recently I always have sore throat after doing soldering. Not too extensive but may be 10-20 soldering points. Even with the window open, and lead free solder, it still effect my throat! I guess I need to use protection filter mask next time!

That was indeed long time ago, it must be about 15 years ahead of my time! And yes, I remeber the pencil is a bit sweet, may be in Asia they still use lead then in the paint of the pencils? I always though the H in HB is the lead portion...!
Anyway, 50's always made me feel life was tender and warm then, one of my fav movie is <> . I recently introduced to modernism and post modernism, I was told we are now too rational and less sensational, we are more precise and mechine like! So I guess the water shade was at around 60's-70's? up to IBM 370 perhaps??
