Hello!
I recently came into ownership of a quad of New Sensor Reissue Gold Lion KT66 tubes. I just had to share my listening impressions! WHAT A TUBE!
These were installed into a Masrhall-esque clone. Originally, the power tubes were New Sensor Reissue Tung-Sol 6L6GC's. The preamp is loaded with pretty standard NOS stuff.
At moderate volume settings, Tung-Sol 6L6GC's were OK. I found them a bit low-end heavy and a bit unexciting and dull. Standard. Like a Clydesdale horse: meant to work, not really about finesse.
- Testing at mid-master and high-preamp, the Tung-Sol 6L6GC could sound bloated in the low-end, confused in the mids, and recessed in the highs. There was simply no articulation of the preamp signal. it was as if my signal was gradually being stuffed into a tube, clipping and topping out, and losing signal information due to over-compression. There was just no fun or life in it.
- With high master and mid-preamp, I got a clearer signal, but the tones were still "meh"; the low-end was still bloated, mids were still a bit confused, the highs were somewhere between somewhat-accurate to shrilly, and break-up was boring and a little farty/thwoppy/raunchy
There came a point where there were few settings with the EQ that could tame the crap tones. It just didn't sound right. I know what magical sounds a 6L6GC can make - they're key to the Fender tone and a slew of other amps. And, I've heard Marshall amps with 6L6GC's. This was simply no-bueno.
Installing these KT66's was like lifting a wet blanket off my amplifier and then some. Everything just got better. Frequency response became more even, and there was greater articulation of sounds across a more open sound stage. There's a certain sweetness to the low-end, the mids are magical, and the highs roll off at just the right points. Also, I found that my preamp and EQ became useful again; it was like I had rediscover the amp all over again.
As the master volume is increased and we get into power tube break-up territory, there's a life that comes out in the Gold Lions that just didn't with the Tung-Sols. It's like an energy, or a form of excitement. Fresh tubes? Perhaps. Better tube? Very likely.
Power tube overdrive with the Tung-Sol 6L6GC sounded like "GGRRRJJJJJSSSHH", like the tube was attempting to play a Metallica through a paper-towel tube stuffed with bees. The Gold Lion reveals a more rolling "GRRINGRRRINGINGING". The amp now has that classic Marshall overdrive we hear in old-school ACDC and Hendrix tunes. At certain higher-volume settings, there's a very satisfying 3D "ahhh" that comes through as well.
I have some more testing to do - I'll update my post when I have some more notes to share :)

May your tubes be lively, warm, and long-lasting. Holy be thy heater.
Follow Ups:
You could play with a little more independent pentode screen supply in the 425v region. That could help too.
Sure beats HiFi gear reviews, and by a long shot!

Hahaha that comment killed me inside Hahaha
I couldn't think of another way to express it (xD

Amp should definitely allowed this, if the player's fingers want this.
Nothing worse than a "dead" amp.
Just curious. Why didn't you build an EL34 or KT-77 clone of the JTM-45? Does the amp have a classic Bluesbreaker sound? That would be very nice!
You using British made Celestion speakers?
Thanks, for posting this! Will need to look into those tubes. As like you, I've found many newly made 6L6GC a little disappointing. Tone-wise.
This amp was bought built and ready from Capsule Music (edit: music consignment store in Toronto).I think the amp would actually take an EL34 or KT77 without issue. It seems to have the bias supply for it. I just haven't come around to trying those just yet :)
And the amp is actually a bit of an odd ball. It has two switches to change the character the amp. Switch#1 changes the gain character of the preamp (have to do some more poking around inside to see exactly what it's doing, but I think it's an adjustment to the V1 cathode resistor and bypass cap; it boosts the gain to give more of a JCM800 feel over a JTM45 character. Switch#2 acts like a presence boost (especially useful/noticeable when the master is cranked).
I can achieve a Bluesbreaker tone keeping the preamp on the JTM45 setting, and kicking on that Presence. It's pretty freakin' close to authentic.
And I'm running a 4x12 of JBL G125s - it's kind of like a softer/relaxed/less sensitive sounding version of the E120 with lower power handling. I find it breaks up a little nicer, too. I think it's mostly known as a PA speaker, but I recall reading something about country artists and slide guitar players swearing by them for their JBL-character without some of that harshness you can get out of E120s. Not perfect, but REALLY good, versatile, all-around driver.
And I know what you mean about the 6L6GC's. The only ones I found nice-sounding were the Winged C's. And those are long gone :(

Nothing like old original Celestion green or black backs from the 70's for the crunch tone, and better compression if you like it. I'm sure the JBL's sound better for clean, but won't nail the classic tone.
yeah, I like Celestion or Fane speakers used with Marshall and Vox amps. JBL and Jensen in Fenders.
