The FAA does not spec the tubes per se any more than they spec the capacitors. The FAA specs the radios. So what the FAA specs is noise and distortion, reliability, that sort of thing (performance) and it's up to the vendor to use the tubes that ensures that the radios meet spec.

geoffkait's picture showa a coin-base 6SN7. Those were made later, after the JAN tubes came about. JAN tubes go back to the WWII era.

There was no FAA until 1958. So if a tube has the inscription "FAA" on it chances are good it was made later than 1958.
