I'm using my Sherwood and I really - REALLY like it. However I need a remote volume due to my source having wide variations in volume between stations.
So I started using my new Marantz PM8004 as a preamp - feeding in through the tuner input on the Sherwood. After I adjusted both volume controls - everything seems to sound just fine. Not much if any difference, that I can tell in sound?????
Any concerns I need to know about doing this?

There isn't any problem doing that but why do that on that wonderful amp..The preamp section of the Sherwood is one of the major components of why the amp sounds go good..That is a true five tube preamp.Have you tried the phono yet?
The tubes that are in the amp are quite elderly and I think it can use fresh 12AX7s if you decide to roll tubes later.I like the 7025s in the phono tho but you only had one.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

I swithced back to the regular setup quickly. Maybe one day I'll find a remote passive or build one.
For now it's back to normal.\
bit of the flu bug got me - so later for listening!!!

Charles, what is your main source? If it's digital, something like a Squeezebox or if you're more inclined a Raspberry PI, Cubox running volmio would allow you to adjust the volume remotely

There's more information on devices to hook to it on the raspyfi's page. It's the precursor to Volmio

There may be something with windows etc also.

I hear that. So do I. Getting rid of the remote is probably the best thing I ever did. Forces me to get off my butt and change stuff!
It's shocking how fast you get use to not having a remote. Maybe a streaming dac with some remote volume control would be the way to go.
"I like the 7025s in the phono tho but you only had one."The excellent current production Sovtek 12AX7LPS is a genuine 7025 equivalent. LPS stands for long plate spiral. It's that spiral wound, hum bucking, heater that separates 7025s from 12AX7s.
If a vintage unit phono section energizes tube heaters with AC, that hum bucking heater is absolutely essential.
