I have been playing with more EL34s since I got home from school and the two pretty impressive ones are the Telefunken 5 staple, which are actual Telefunken as also have the pupils in the plate as opposed to the rectangular holes that most have. Also, the EI 6CA7 are very good also..At first I didn't like them but now after a good break in they(EI) sound very telefunken like.
There is also another EL34 that sounds pretty detailed and energetic and that is,the early Shuggie EL34s.These aren't even matched and they sound very acceptable. If these were matched,I think they would sound even better..The teles and the EIs tho, don't suffer bass issues and are very dynamic in the mids to upper mids without getting the rounded off roll you get with a lot of el34s.I like the real Teles very much..
It's always nice to have the best of everything in one tube but that's almost impossible.Every tube, whether it be a 6L6gc,EL37,EL34,KT66,or KT88,is going to excel in one area more than the other.I guess this is why we get into rolling tubes but unlike audiophiles with sand amps,we can at least tailor the sound of our gear with a quick tube change and be smiling..

If you really want to taste the best of EL34/6CA7 sound, try the black bottle Treasure series 6CA7. Like a cross between EL34 and 6L6. You get most of the extension and dynamics of a 6L6, with the midrange of an EL34. They have bested all Mullards and the JJ KT77 (which I also like a lot) in my Rogue.
That said, I still prefer EI KT90, GEC KT66,and RCA 6L6 blackplate in the amp. But if its gotta be EL34s in an amp, the Treasures are hard to beat.
I intend to do that.I can just imagine they are out of this world knowing Shuggie's sonic reputation.
michael: your post references sand amps. is that a typo or a reference to another type of amp? whatever it means, i like the image of a sand amp.

...the connection is based on sand being composed primarily of silicon dioxide while a solid state amp usually uses silicon based semiconductors maybe even mixed with a bit of silicon dioxide if MOSFETs are in the mix. Get it?
Betcha already knew all that!
makes sense now! thanks.
i had a feeling it might come around to SS amps.
and what analagous term would the SS camp use to disparage tube amps? glass amps might be a contender, but from this side does not sound so bad.

Tubby tubes is about as close as you can get for a disparaging remark. Yes, a poorly set up tube amp will have tubby bass. In this context, an ill considered speaker selection counts as poor setup.
Careful mating of speaker to amp is essential to obtaining maximal results, regardless of the active device technology used.

...I'm not aware of a REALLY negative term for a valve amp. "Vacuum state", or "hollow state" have been used but I consider them to be more cutely descriptive than negative. Maybe the worst I've heard is "obsolete" which isn't so bad either depending on one's POV (and age?).
Just tell them this. You have seen many solid state amp/preamp manufacturers thru the years say, tube like sound in their advertising literature.
Can you show me any tube amp manufacturer that advertises their amps saying, transistor like sound? That's all you have to tell them.
i would say looking around the audio world today, tube amps are anything but obsolete. tho they certainly appeared obsolete in the 70's, and perhaps to some exent thru the 90's.
maybe tube technology could be dubbed "antique." that term has a resonance. even for a brand new tube amp just built and purchased and brought home, many of us are already thinking what it would sound like with "nos" tubes from many decades ago.
certainly "high maintenance," as tubes get old, can fail, bias drifts etc.

For my Blue Hawaii SE headphone energizer/amp (for electrostatic headphones) I got to try a variety of EL34s that a friend had- Telefunken, late 50's 6CA7, xf2, xf4 (if I recall correctly). I had my pick of 4 of any of these tube (for FREE!) for the amp. I ended up choosing the telefunkens.
I have some other Telefunken EL34s but they are made by RFT and are the skinny bottles.
Do those TFK EL34 have the trademark "diamond" engraved on the envelope?
Thanks!
They did but they rubbed off..They are genuine because they have the upper and lower pupils and,the little tiny heat wings that stick out in the center of the plate above and below each pupil holes.
