Uncle Stu wrote "Prices for the tubes were relatively moderate till about 8 years ago. You could get them for about $15 to $20 each. I think that is true of many tubes. Personally, I do not want to own any gear that needs 'rare' tubes to sound 'right'. Hopefully we will start seeing designs based on new production tubes.

new production tubes will never scratch the qualtity level of the old ones IMHO.
why donīt you look after a flock of vintage valves you need in your gear and would enjoy minimum 3 benefits that new ones would never give: reliable electric parameters, fantastic sound for nearly a liftime (small tubes) and as a side effect their value would even not decrcease like the price of used new ones. waste money! no bank performs that profit...

They already have...
Hi Jim, which ones would you recommend for the new. I need to find a pair. Thanks.
my stash of NOS E88CC's when I'm buried 6 feet under......
Stu
You must have a stash of JAN Philips 6922s! They are NOS, right?? :~)
I just take exception to sweeping generalizations like I originally replied to. First off, "NOS" is not a brand, and some "NOS" ain't so great! Second some current production is really good - good enough where a person's like or dislike is based on personal tonal preference since the quality is top shelf.
If you have some tubes you really like that's great - but for someone to say they "will never scratch the qualtity (sic) level of the old ones IMHO" is just silly - IMHO!
I have sealed cases of NOS Jan Philips/Sylvania 6922's but I consider them to be trash sonically, at least not when compared to my Mullard and Philips types.... Mullards have superb mids and bottom end, the Original Dutch has superb highs. While neither are perfect, in their respetive categories, I have not found any Russians to compare, but then that's just my opinion.
BTW, Still have that stash of GE 6550's I bought from you......Thanks, although that was many many years back.
Stu
Not to say that it's not working for you, but in my case the 6922 NOS Mullard, Brimar and Telefunken that I have just sounded ok with my ARC equipment especially in my Ref pre amp. Even the Sylvannia/GE tubes sounded a little sluggish for my taste. However, I do find that the newer/reissue tubes from EH and Svetlana do sound good and have an excellent synergy with my ARC equipment.
Does this mean that I'm going to sell my NOS stash uh, uh, I'm just waiting for the right tube equipment to put them in.

that newer construction components have compensated for the Soviet "sound". That is fairly easy to do these days with the variety of coupling caps available. In addition Soviet tubes can be pushed extremely hard in order to extract further performance. NOS types do not take kindly to this kind of abuse ( particularly the AI m3 preamp).I based my judgements on vintage gear and their circuits, which, not surprisingly, favor NOS tubes. I would estimate that up to 1998 or thereabouts, most gear favor the NOS Western type tubes. I have too many pieces which are of older vintage which are not considered to be collectible so I have modified their circuits, primarily power supplies. With the NOS types, I can surpass the performance many more modern designs.
But of course YMMV
StuPS: I have modified an Arc Ref 1, too, BTW.

did you perform on the ref?

Check out the thread on Tweaks which the OP had changed out the bolts holding his toroidal transformers. Your Ref has two toroids against the side panels in the front that benefit greatly from this simple mod.
One is for the B+ and the other for filament, IIRC.

You wouldn't want to know........
heh, heh, heh.....
I did change out the rectifier tube and series pass tube. Changed out a few of the coupling caps also. The unit was still under warranty so I had to do minimal work otherwise the selling dealer would have blown his top! Changed out the hook up wire also, IIRC.
Stu
do respond well to tube rolling. A friend of mine sent his to ARC for recappng using similar caps from the ref 3. I did listen to it a while back, the sound has improved in a different way, but one aspect of sound that I noticed was, it sounded a little cooler. However, he likes it that way, so.....
