Hello,
I bought the tubes (link below) and I am trying to find out its history. I have a considerable amount of Red bases RCA's 5691 and some branded GE's. This is the first time I saw a black base.
Any tips where I can read about them?
Thanks you very much.
regards,
Abe
Follow Ups:
I have three of these tubes sent to me by a friend, and they do sound great. It does have the exact same plate structure as the red base, but instead of double D getters they have double halo getters.
I don't have a set of red base tubes to compare them sonicly, but the friend that sent them to me say they sound different than the red base. According to him, he doesn't really like the red base tubes, he found them too warm and "tubey" sounding, he preferes the black base tubes.

Normally the brown and non black bases are considered to be low loss bases: meaning that they tend to NOT leak high voltage across the base between the pins. You will notice that many bases have ridges between the pins in order to lengthen the pathway between the pins and provide better insulation. This normally translates into more extended and clearer highs.
Of course YMMV,
Stu
I'd guess there are other differences in the tube other than the base color and getter, they are just not evident from a visual inspection.

Your input is much appreciated!

Don't have the info you're looking for...I just want to know when you audition them if the red base makes them sound any bette... Judging by the internal structure, I don't see any difference between the two. Do they have rectangular getters as well? It always amazes me how much more people will pay for the red base 5691. I've compared red & brown base side by side and find NO difference at all, at least with GE labels.
"I KNOW you can hear it, but are you REALLY listening?"

Hello,
I will receive it this coming week and will compare the sound and the getter structures. My gut feeling......this tube is the same as the red base 5691.

Abe
