Many other older machines also have high quality transports.
Yes. My Nak OMS7 ll and my Denon 3520 and my Phillips 960,all have wonderfully made transports. These are 80s players tho and they rival and beat a lot new players I have heard for playing regular CDS.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.

If you own a Philips CD-960 you already have a machine that has all the makings of an exceptional CD-Player, capable of matching all but the very few "extreme" units out there (which usually come with extreme prices too).
The Philips CD-960 is actually internally the same as the Marantz CD-94 (the cosmetics are different and Philips looks like it fell out of the Ugly Tree, hit all the branches on the way down and was them whacked a few times with the ugly stick for good measure) which in turn is almost the same as the Marantz CD-80.
As it so happens, I wrote a little piece of modding a Marantz CD80 just recently:
Modifying A Marantz CD-80 CD Player
You of course do not have to do it my way (with easy use modules from diyhifisupply), but you can do it the Lampizator way if you like.

All the Philips/Marantz CD-Players with TDA1541 can also be made non-oversampling.

The Denon Player should also lend itself very well to replacing the output stage with tubes and other mods, Non-OS is harder to do than on TDA1541 based players but still possible.
And all in all, one-box players still rule over DAC's connected by SPDIF when it comes to low jitter (suitably modified or designed).

That's why I suggest you use your DIY skills and modify an all in one dedicated cd player. I have 3 machines that I modded. And I've run a great analog rig all these years too. Man you should hear my Cal Aria 3 that I modded. I/V stage discrete with the tubes amplifying the voltage output right off the 18 Bit DAC chip.
Guys
The HD wont suffer mechanical issues like the transport will I wouldn't think. If I can use the transport of my 960 to play SACDs and DVDs,I would but I can't. I did replace the laser about 4 years ago because I had found a brand new one on ebay for 22 dollars. It fixed the skipping problem it had toward the end of the discs.
