I'm loading the mm section of my phonostage and need a source for high quality caps approx 200-400pf. What's a good cap to use in this (I assume) somewhat critical position? Michael Percy doesn't have any, but said for small value caps I should look first for polystyrene and second for silver mica. Anyone have any thoughts? TIA
Follow Ups:
You may not be aware that TAB Mica in the UK does made to measure Mica caps - so if you want 297pf (say) they will make you 297pf andat 0.1%.
They sound good too and the prices are VERY reasonable.
Be careful of polystyrene. It is an excellent dielectric, but it has the lowest "service temperature" of any of the common capacitors. It is very easy to melt the plastic by soldering or too much heat from neighboring components.
Although controversial, you can also try NP0 or COG ceramic. Do not consider any of the other ceramics. My favorite is the 1000 V disc ceramic NP0s from Ceramite (former Sprague, now Vishay), but they are only available up to 220 pF or so. (The modern monolithic multi-layer ceramic (MMLC) capacitors (chip capacitors in a plastic housing) are usually available only up to 200 V DC working voltage in COG, but can be found over 1000 pF in 200 V).
Rel-Cap RTE are reasonably priced and good sounding polystyrenes available from Parts Connexion, Sonicraft and no doubt others. Handmade Electronics has Silver Mica in all the necessary sizes and 1% tolerance. Sonicraft also has Sonicaps, Gen I, in the many of the sizes needed at very good prices.

I sent back some .01uf REL-CAP RTE that had magnetic leads. Apparently, the vendor has to specify with REL that they want to stock non-ferous.
Or, who is stocking ferrous, that you had to return?
Inquiring minds want to know!

...I say aviod like the plague the small value transparent round ones with axial leads that do not exit on the center line.
They tend to look good but sound bad, by experience.
Silver mica are OK, but I prefer the FKP2 range from WIMA. No idea where you would get them outside of Europe.

Mouser Electronics has some Wima FKP2 caps in smaller values.

Thanks so much!
