you seem to have the back (speaker/room) end figured out, so the question becomes what your preamp can do and how to make the most of it wrt your system.
if your preamp is active and delivers the juice you have a very different situation than a "stock" CD driving passive.
if you lay out your system, advice will follow from many sources. It is then up to you to decide which path to follow.

Follow Ups:
Dave - I've got a few preamp scenarios available (and planned).
Two of the three that I have now that are working are SS: Marantz 7T and Yamaha C-85. I have a manual for the C-85 and it says the maximum output is 8.5v. I imagine that would be enough. Correct? I don't know about the 7T.
In the tube arena: I have a Voice of Music preamp that was pulled from a console. I built a separate power supply for it and modded it so it has two different levels of output. It came with a pair of 12AX7s but I have some 5751s in there. I'm also planning to build a DIY Pre using 27s. And somewhere I have a Dynaco PAS 3 that needs some work. I'm not used to working with circuit boards though so I may just gut it and build something point to point inside.
In additon to those possibilities, I've also been playing with an active crossover so this amp may, at some point, be used in a biamped or triamped set up. I've got a biamped system set up currently and I'm really diggin it! It's got a Pilot 260 running the lows and a Pilot 500 (PP 6BQ5 pulled from a console, kinda a mini version of a 232) running mid/highs. I don't know if the crossover provides any additional gain or not. It's just a cheapy unit (Pyle PYX-3X) and the manual doesn't say. But I'm running out of the crossover directly into the Pilots without any additional pre and it's plenty loud.
Thanks for your advice . . . . Charlie
