Yes, Im worried about the laminations!

Dude,
Do not use acetone on the laminations! The reason the core is laminated to begin with is to cut eddy current losses down. The laminations are LACQUERRED. Acetone will dissolve the insulating lacquer. :> (
Either you remove the offending finish by mechanical means or you cover it with something else.

Even mechanical removal risks what is below it.
I plan to paint it, then remove the bells and do them seperately (with a bit more time and care. Hopefully it will look decent by the end.
Transformer bells are very difficult to paint. No matter how you position them, there are vertical surfaces which let the paint drip. Make sure you apply the paint very thinly, or it will run.
Also use primer and good enamel. Do not use Krylon. It is ok for a few applications but because it dries fast, it contains too much solvent and not enough pigment. Using it results in a very thin coating and it is not durable at all. Use Rust-Oleum if you must use a can.
I mod and restore a lot of equipment and have a paint shop in RI that paints all of my parts, including bells. I have them use SW Polane. It has a medium, spatter like texture and it is super durable and gorgeous too.
