Thanks for your response. I am a newbie in recording and mics, etc.
Someone told me once, collecting mics could be a dangerously expensive endeavor... I thought about starting with low budget but high dollar/performance model. Would any of your fav mics listed qualify?

The MXLs are working WAY above expectations. I was thinking they were going to be totally crap, but they actually smoked my AKG 414s! I am not going to go the full monty and tubify them, but will just do simple upgrades. Sweetwater or fullcompass should stock them. My tube mics cost about 50 times more than the MXLs but don't sound 50 times better :-)
I have used the B&O ribbons and RCA ribbons in the past and they can offer very fine results. They sound 'ungimmicky' compared to most condenser mics, but are harder to work with on many locations due to their figure of eight polar pattern.
