Yesterday morning I went to the flea market, in search of a good deal, like I do quite often. And there it was: a quartet of tiny Dali Zensor 1 speakers, and a nondescript powered subwoofer. There were also two Dali column speakers and a center channel, which seemed in bad condition so I passed.
I snatched the four Zensor 1 and the sub (I was curious) for 70 euro :)
Turns out the sub is a useless piece of sh*t, no real lows and noisy; BUT those tiny Zensor bookshelves are real gems!
Googling the model it appears they retailed for about 300$/pair, which is really nothing nowadays, but listening to them you'd believe they were much more expensive. Neutral and transparent, very agile and lively, punchy bass that's surprisingly solid for such a tiny speaker, and a vast, deep soundstage with the speakers disappearing completely.
Tested them with a Tripath TK2050 amp from Hifimediy, a diy Pass B1 preamp, Gustard X26Pro DAC, Audiolab 6000CDT transport, Xangsane pure silver and Belden 9497 cables.
Seriously, this very budget combination allows me to enjoy music in a way that pushes the boundaries of what a budget system is capable of. It sounds 100x more expensive. Hell, if it wasn't for the sheer scale and impact, I wouldn't even miss my huge horn system which is currently out of service because the active crossover needs a repair. That's how good it sounds... and I'm a bit shocked, to be honest!
Follow Ups:
that is physically i would stack them horizontally, woofer to woofer with the tweeters inward. then, hook them up in parallel by running a jumper from each pos and neg of both speakers, then hook up the main wires from the amp to one of the speakers as normal. this gives you ostensibly a 4 ohm load which draws more power from the amp.
the woofers being close to each other helps them couple for more impact. you may not need a sub with this arrangement, at least not right away.

I thought about it, but then I saw that one speaker has a missing tweeter ( I didn't inspect them closely when I bought them, at such a low price I figured it wasn't needed)
I've been looking for the tweeter online but without luck so far, maybe I will contact Dali.
But this is all just a temporary arrangement until I get my big system up and running again.
I liked that Dali but not their more expensive ones. I think I have a problem there like liking the small Advent, the AR 7, Cambridge Audio Works model 6, Monitor Audio BR2, the lowest priced Joseph Audio and Harbeth and Tivoli Radio.
Wish you great times with Dali.
