It's funny that you write about the Widor Mass. I'm not familiar with that work, but reviewers always comment about bass response by making reference to pipe organs, as in, "you'll be fine with this speaker unless you listen to lots of pipe organ music." ;-)

I listen to music at close to live levels. For me, this is non-negotiable. Plus I demand that the speakers do this effortlessly! Small two-ways will never reproduce the dynamics of live music. And, yes, a speaker must be flat to at least 40 hz.
