I like to get some opinions on the a set of speakers I'm looking at. One is a pair of used Paragigm Studio 60v2 the other is a new pair of Mirage Omni 260 both are within $40 of each other. The paradigms being less. I've read a lot of great things about the Paradigm speakers but very little on the Mirages. Does anyone have any opinions one either or both?
Follow Ups:
Haven't heard those particular Mirages, but have experimented quite a bit with DIY omnidirectionals, so these comments apply to omnis "in general."
All speakers require attention to room placement and setup to get the best out of them, but omnis are fussier than most. They need PLENTY of open space to the sides and behind them (larger rooms are better), and NO nearby hard, reflective surfaces. Surrounding walls should be covered with a combination of absorbtive and diffusive materials, such as shelves of books, draperies, tapestries, etc. With these cautions observed, omnis can throw an impressively wide, deep soundstage, but may suffer from some loss of image specificity, UNLESS they have a forward-firing tweeter (as in the Linkwitz Pluto, and some of the Samadhi and GR kits) which causes the power response to narrow to monopolar at higher frequencies. I believe the Mirage tweeters fire upwards into a conical diffusor, however, so they will have an omni dispersion pattern all the way up.
You should definitely listen to the Mirages, properly set up in YOUR room, before plunking down cash for them. You may or may not like what they do. If not, the Paradigms would be the better choice.
I decided against the mirage speakers. I just don't know enough about them and I wasn't able to demo them. I went with a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 8i speakers. I have to say I love the monitors. Anyway thanks for the info on the Omnis. By what you wrote I think I make the right choice as my room is not that big.
