I will never understand how he used such wide ranging tubes in a SET amp with PP OPTs. I listened to his setup in his basement. Really a beautiful sound. A lot of texture. It was memorable. Really a nice guy. I use AZ1 rectifiers whenever I can because of him.

Geo, thanks for sharing that with us. Texture and a certain warmth is how I hear it, so well said.I had a very "hip" uncle, mind you I'm in my 60's and he is long gone, but we would go visit and he would always put on music in his hi-fi for me. I would just sit and daydream about all the things kid's daydream about. But I loved the sound and realized years later that was the sound I had been looking for. He passed many years ago, but my aunt is still alive and had tons of pictures, so I went through 100's of them looking for the equiptment he had. He had a McIntosh setup with Klipschorns.
When I went to see the Hogan at vman71's house, btw I found it on this site, the second I heard it, it brought me back to that place. The Hogan is paired with Cornwalls and for me the sound is perfect.
