801s like a higher primary than 8k, 12k is more like it. Tango used to make a 14k xfmr for the 801 for the Japanese market. PSE might be better with 8k. Lots of driver stages to choose from; in my SE10 amp (under construction) I am using a 6A6 similar to Thomas Mayers designs for the 6N7.
Follow Ups:
The load resistance is a function of the operating point.
600V/30mA would do nicely into 8K.
I'd keep the plate voltage kinda high to stay away from that 0V grid voltage line on the plate curves.
Thanks for input on that op point. A bit higher than I wanted, and will require a different power transformer, but not a big deal. One PT is less expensive than 2x Electraprint OPTs.
As far as i can tell, this circuit is the basis for the Fi 2A3 and 45 monos, and maybe one other that gets a lot of attention. Don't be fooled by its age and simplicity. (I know nothing about the 801A).
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
