Why not use the 6SF5 or 6SF5GT (glass) as the driver?
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.

I have four reasons :
(1) I don't want to freak out a "Newbie" with too many changes. Just what is absolutely necessary. Notice, I left that 10 HY high DCR choke intact !!
(2) My REAL preference is simply to employ half a 12AX7, first, because there are MANY choices for tube rolling and, second....
(3) Miller: whereas the 6SL7 has 2.8 uuF for Miller ( grid to plate) the 6SF5 has 2.4 uuF and the 12AX7 has 1.7 uuF. Lower is better.
(4) Both the 6SL7 and the 6SF5 come in octal bases, and these require an extra set of solder connections, from the tube's innards, to the octal's base pins.
A 12AX7 comes in a 9 pin miniature base, and the internal wire leads come right out of the glass, at the button end, with NO solder and dissimilar metal interface happening. On a high mu triode, I THINK I can hear that as a slight advantage to the 12AX7, sound wise.
Reason (1) dealing with a newbie, was really of prime importance to me.
