Anyone own these or have listened to them extensively. Seem like an excellent match for SET amplifiers. Every review I have found says they are very, very musical, dynamic and airy.
Follow Ups:
Ok, Ive had my Korneff 45SE integrated for only 3 days now, and I feel like the caveman who discovered fire. The amp has a ways to go before it is broken in, so I won't say much this early on. The synergy with the TL-D1s is fantastic, however. In this economy, it's wonderful to find a bargain, let alone two. I've owned countless pieces of gear over the years, most of it much more expensive, but I can't recall the last time I heard this sense of ease in my system. My room is about 14 x 26, and 2.5 watts is plenty with the TL-D1s (using EML Solid Plates). I have the volume setting at 10:00 right now, and it's fine.
By the way, Jeff Korneff is simply amazing to deal with. Not only did he build me an astoundingly good amp, he got it in my hands less that three weeks after my first call to him. You could not ask to speak with a nicer person. I now understand why he is so revered.
I picked up a pair of TL-D1's recently, and so far, I think they are fantastic. I've only owned them for a week, so my impressions are still forming. For the type of music that I listen to, jazz, chamber, singer/songwriter types, I have found them to be thrilling in their immediacy, dynamic scale, and ability to convey emotional elements of the performance. I wanted a more sensitive pair of speakers to use with lower powered amps, including SET designs. Right now, I'm using an Audio Zone integrated amp, while I await the return of my Eico HF-81 from being modified by Sam Kim. I'm also awaiting a 45SE integrated amp from Jeff Korneff, so I should be able to offer some direct feedback to your question in about a month. I am extremely happy with these speakers and am particularly anxious to hear them with my SET amp. Feel free to drop me a line if I forget to post a followup.
I own these speakers, and can't say enough about them. I posted a review some time back on AA. Tonian's old showroom was a few miles from my house so I had the opportunity to listen to his Phy speaker extensively, in addition to the TL-D1. Have not heard the smaller stand mounted speakers. In my case, I'd have to spend a lot more to approach this performance. I think Tony has got it figured out, at least for the reproduction qualities I value. I've used two amps: 8 watt 300B SET and DIY Pass F3. Excellent results in both cases. Try to hear his recordings, which are not commercial at this point...just unbelievable.
I only heard the Tonian TL-NFSM and they were honestly one of the worst speaker I ever had to listen to. On that pair, the Ribbon tweeter wasn't matched in amplitude to the main driver so that at the 10KHz crossover frequency there was 10dB jump in the frequency response (measured with a Behringer measurement microphone). Apparently the designer did not measure this one when it went out, or even worse, it was designed that way to capture attention with its "airy" sound. Most single driver speakers are not perfectly flat with some peakiness in the treble, but the 10dB plateau beyond 10 KHz, I have never encountered anywhere.
Furthermore, it lacked the midrange detail and texture I am used to from other single driver designs like the Cain & Cain Abby.
Just my experience so far with what may have been a faulty pair.
