I believe they are foe. They will never get a pass from me after selling sonic excrement when they opened the iTunes store and calling it "CD Quality". An outright lie that they have never been called on.

I love mine. I don't use I-tunes. Pretty much everything is Apple lossless plus a few WAV.
"What did the Romans ever do for us?"
Don't own any Apple products, audio-related or not - and don't feel the need to.
I just don't like being locked-in or restricted to options of their choosing (this or that, 1 & 3 or 2 & 3 but not 1 & 2).
...the sum is greater than the parts! ;-)

My point was that Apple won't let you have 1 & 2 together.
but they offer only Silver. I get it. ;-)

Let me put it this way, imagine Apple now sells hamburgers...
Apple: Welcome to Apple. Would you like to try one of our burgers?
You: Yes, I would.
Apple: What would you like on your burger? We offer lettuce & cheese or tomato & cheese.
You: I would like... lettuce & tomato.
Apple: Sorry, but we only offer lettuce & cheese or tomato & cheese.
You: How much is the lettuce & cheese?
Apple: No cost to you on our burgers.
You: How much is the tomato & cheese?
Apple: No cost to you on our burgers.
You: So, as long as I buy one of your burgers, either selection is free?
Apple: Yes.
You: If either selection is free, then why can't I get lettuce & tomato?
Apple: Because that would be giving you what you want, not what we want to give you.
You: Well, I think I'll just have a cup of iced tea.
Apple: We offer ice in a cup or tea in a cup.
Same here.
Tubes and vinyl are preferred.
So don't get your music content from iTunes! I don't know any audiophiles who do. All of mine came off my CD's or other sources. Sure, I have a number of 'music videos' that came from iTunes. It's all fun stuff.
You sound like an angry old man who had his record player taken away from him! OK, I'd be angry too if someone took my turntable away. But heck, this is just a hobby so no need to pop a capillary over your hatred for Apple. ;-)

Uhhhhhhhhhh. Huh?
First, I own a Mac Mini 2 and a Nano. My wife owns a Touch.
I ain't angry or old, ha.
What I do despise is blind worship. Apple, like many corporations, lied.
They lied about the music they sell on iTunes, they lied about battery life on iPods, and they lied about Steve Job's health.
Sircom was providing food for thought.
I kind of agree, but I guess in a different way....
They definitely stretch the marketing point a bit far. It makes me mad that they tout it all as great and innovative home entertainment integrated foundation products that are of super high quality. They fall way down where the high quality is concerned: and I think, that even non-audiophiles are frustrated by this.
What is the weltaunschaung of the macmini server, but a home entertainment, media delivery system in one small box? So, why doesn't it have a decent BluRay capable disc drive, a full size DVI port, and a SPDIF rca jack, Netflix/Pandora capable, with two 2TB hds? Charge up to $1000 more? A bit steep, - but I'd be in... At $2000 they'd sell a billion, at $1500, they'd sell 3 billion...
What I found most frustrating is that they get half way there, and then fall down badly. If they wanted to, they could go for it, charge more, and people would buy it: (consumers already have with some of their ideas, like Apple TV).
"I'm not locked in here with you, You're locked in here with ME"
Different, and interesting angle.
I will go one step further on your theory of going "half way there"..
No iTunes support for FLAC. They have the developer community so scared that there is exactly, ONE, (and it is a piece of shit at that), FLAC plug in for iTunes.
I have twice owned PCs, and stopped using them as just too non-intuitive. Increasing Apple has gotten too non-intuitive. But I have always thought Itunes was a joke, although I now let the computer think I am using it, while in reality it is Pure Music. I once bought an Ipod and used it with cd level information, all three albums. I haven't used it in years.
Yes, Apple going with MP3 and now their new Cloud are of no interest to me, but are probably going where the audience is. Yes, Jobs has relentlessly moved Apple along, while Sculley with his MBA mentality went for cheapness and bottom line. I would say more power to him.
The majority of content is mixed and master on Apple PC's. And based on the amount of test equipment they buy from us, they are very concerned about the performance of their products.
Three most important things in Audio reproduction: Keep the noise levels low, the power high and the room diffuse.
"The majority of content is mixed and master on Apple PC's"
Not in real recording studios. It is all DAW and proprietary hardware.
Maybe Apples are used in basements and home studios
And do you really know what they use the testing equipment they from for? It may have absolutely nothing to do with Audio.
