I'm interrested in your alternative solution. Have you posted about them either here or elsewhere? If so please let me know where so I can read.
Follow Ups:
I used to maintain a Linux Wiki over at DIY-Audio. Since they reshuffled
the forum layout - I never managed ( time and motivation) to build it up again.
I installed the currently running beta systems via remote access by myself. (I couldn't afford endless conversations/support via mail/phone - within less than an hour they
were set) Prerequisite was a pre-installed Ubuntu.
My final goal was to supply a bootable pendrive system. You just plug it into any PC and your PC becomes a Linux Audio machine sourcing the data from UPNP network storages. I got quite far with it.
What scares me is to support such a project. If you make it available to a wider community it will take 90% of your time to handle all the requests. No idea how Cics manages this.
Honestly - since I have my Squeezebox with iPeng up'n running my motivation to finish this project went down to zero.
Let see - if I can find a motivation to reanimate the project.
Cheers
Please don't start something just for me. If its Linux I would need to study that for 6 months before I would feel comfortable enough to try someting like that which you have done.
I know that Bertel and others have been having extremely good luck with squeeze box setups. So there are alternatives to cmp^2. Not that I am chomping at the bit to get out of cmp^2 (in fact I just love where I am now with it). But I am always looking for sq opportunities/different approaches.
Thank you for your response.

You're not alone. I havn't met very many audiophiles who are just happy with what they have. Doesn't matter what they paid for it - they always want more - and the funny thing is - they always manage to get more.
P.S: I know Bertel.
