Thanks for the detailed feedback. Answers to your questions below:
Qobuz only or do you stream from a local library? If local, where/how is the library stored?
I don't stream from a local library but I want to maintain that capability. Right now I only use playlists in Roon and Qobuz. I have a large hard drive of music but have not had the energy to learn how to access.
Do you need multi-room playback? No
Do you want DSP capability? I don't use in my 2 channel system but it's something I'd like to explore down the line. I'm a purist with my home system unlike my car system which is all DSP.
Are you the sole user, or are there others sharing? I'm the sole user but my adult kids do visit and like to use Spotify sometimes. They get annoyed with Dad's Qobuz only system.
Do you prefer an all-in-one solution or can you handle multiple apps? I prefer software as simple as possible and don't care for multiple apps. I have little patience with computer related hardward/software when it comes to my music but I know it is a necessary evil for access to all the music I like.
I'm paying the normal annual fee for Roon but this freezing issue has been present since day 1. I can unlock and get music back playing but I'm tired of the interruptions. I submitted a help ticket at Roon but I'm not optimistic about the outcome. I do like the simplicity of Roon but also that I'm paying for lots of features I don't use. I probably use Roon for 60% of my listening with the balance being vinyl and compact discs.
Follow Ups:
From your description it sounds like Roon is a great choice for you. Sorry to hear it isn't working out. You are doing the right thing by posting on the Roon support site to try to find a fix. I searched for your help ticket using some educated guesses but didn't find anything. The way Roon runs its support system makes all tickets transparent to the community. The Roon staff are usually good about responding, and there are many among the community who are willing to help. Sometimes the advice can be well-intentioned but uninformed. There are some smart folks on there with good experience, but separating the wheat from the chaff isn't easy.
I can help you try to troubleshoot, but it's more productive to do that on the Roon forum rather than here.
A couple of people have suggested LMS, and it might be worth a try for you. I ran LMS for a while until I found Roon ten years ago, and have never looked back. I suspect that whatever problems you are having with Roon will probably also manifest in LMS, but you never know.
Best of luck.
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
Thank you for that generous offer! Roon has responded and gave me some suggestions. I will implement and report back.
I'd also suggest trying Lyrion Music Server. I've only used it on the Raspberry Pi platform. I don't know what the experience would be like on a Windows machine. But it's free and has a Spotify plug-in.
I just read that you are 3 years older than me so I guess I can't use old age as an excuse :-)
