- the American 6AS7G is supposed to sound a bit better (probably owing to making slightly more power) but are also tricky with reliability because they are not designed for fixed bias operation.
So in a nutshell if you are going to use tubes that hold up, there isn't a lot of difference with the sound.
Over time their transconductance will go down. So when replaced with good tubes you will hear an improvement. Checking them is tricky since many testers don't give an accurate reading. We test them in circuit.
Follow Ups:
Over the course of that time I have had run ins with the Chinese tubes. I had no quarrel with the sound compared to Sovtek but they unfailingly would wear out way quicker than the Russian stuff. Same with the 6SN7s. I will no longer entertain Chinese tubes.
